How often should we celebrate communion? July 12, 2022 23:44

For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself. On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this in remembrance of me as often as you drink it.” For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again. (1 Corinthian 11 : 23 -26)

The celebration of Holy Communion, is one of the last instructions Our Lord Jesus Christ gave to the disciples, and which has been pass down from then until now.  This feast which is  a mirror of the Passover, is a common christian practice.  The passover was instituted when God by His mighty power brought out the children of Isreal from slavery and bondage in Egypt and the began the journey to the promised Land.  They were to eat unleavened bread and the blood of the lamb which they killed in preparation of the great deliverance was to be put on the door post of every home so that when the angel of death came over Egypt, it would passover their homes and their first born son, and cattle would be save from death.

On the Night our Lord Jesus Christ was to begin the journey to the cross which coincided with the passover, he started this great tradition.  He did not put aside the old tradition but rather used that same tradition to fulfil the promise and covenant that God had made with Abraham.  He started the process of redeeming us from sin and death to eternal life in Him. He instructed that we do these in remembrance of him.

So How often show we do this?

Some christians do this at every meeting, some once a month and others suggest once a year at easter.  Our Lord Jesus Christ institutes a new covenant.  This promise will be fulfilled when he comes again.  The celebration of Holy Communion is a reminder of this covenant.  It reminds us of death, and his coming again.  How often do we need to be reminded of the covenant? Would once a year be sufficient? After all the Israelites only celebrated passover once a year!  The early church celebrated Holy Communion or the Lord's supper every time they met.

I conclude that let every man be persuaded. The important point is that we "do this in remembrance of Me".

Whether daily yearly or however often the Church decides, prefilled communion cups makes the celebration of Holy Communion, The Lord's Supper, Holy Eucharist. easy and quick.  There are no waste, and no washing up.  The sealed compartments makes it hygienic.  There are no spills and the cups are easy to open.

If the reason why your church does not celebrate often is because of the preparation needed and the work and workers involved, then give pre-filled communion a try.   The convenience might help you celebrate more often.
